Got a couple of the Zapf fonts, but no dingbats.

Unless you are looking for a specific character, Windows ships with the equivalent in the font set Wingdings which in Windows XP are called Wingdings, Wingdings2 and Wingdings3.

To look for a particular font in any loaded fontface, go to Start, All programs, Accessories, System Tools, Character Map. From the pulldown you can review any character in any loaded font. It is also useful to use this tool for cutting and pasting a less common used character into a document or webpage.

Most fonts stem from the print/publishing industry. Most fonts are also variations of similar previous fonts so are referred to by font family. Even with an individual font it can be displayed as bold, italic, superscript, subscript...all variations of the same individual font.

Fonts that are variations of previous fonts in most cases can not use the name of the original font which is usually trademarked. In the case of Zapf Dingbats, just because you have a font on your MAC named Zapf Dingbats doesnt neccesarily mean that you have the particular dingbat font someone is looking for.

If you check out the International Typeface Corporation's website http://www.itcfonts.com and search on Dingbats you will see that even though their are the publisher of Zapf Dingbats (of which there are 6 zonts named Zapf DIngbats), they also have other fonts named Dingbats (over 100 of them). There are literally over 1000 fonts named Dingbats, Wingbats or other variations of the Dingbat family of non character fonts.

Originally the dingbats font family was created as an easy way for a typesetter to insert a graphic within a body of text by inserting it into a tray of lead type. Because these non-character based fonts were non-standard, they became know as "dingbat" fonts...as in what dingbat put this font into my type tray.

I work for Microsoft where we have a group of over 2 dozen people who specialize in Typography as Microsoft publishes Windows and Office localized in over 180 languages which all have their own style of script as well as multiple fonts. For example there are 19 countries/people groups that use Cyrillic character sets for their langauge and need to be able to type in Cyrillic in a number of fonts.
